1: All CPU Meter

The gadget I used to monitor my dual-core computer running Vista wasn’t available in a quad-core version, so I switched to All CPU Meter (Figure A). It supports up to eight cores (so I have room to grow). All CPU Meter isn’t as complex as some, but the simplicity works in its favor. It monitors your memory usage as well as CPUs, and it packs a lot of information into a small space. I also like that you can change the background color to match your preferences.

2: Windows Orb Clock

During all the time I used Vista and the first year I used Windows 7, my analog clock gadget of choice was the electric blue version of the one that comes with the operating system. But now I’ve switched to a much cooler model: the Vista Orb Clock (Figure B). Of course, the same orb is also on the Windows 7 Start menu. I love its clean look and the nice symmetry of having it just across from my Start Menu orb (since I have my Taskbar set to the vertical position.

3: Clipboard Manager

I’ve also replaced the Clipboard gadget I was using with Vista. I liked being able to access previous Clipboard items — without opening an Office app — but the old one was a little cheesy looking and limited in its functionality. Clipboard Manager (Figure C) looks slick and is feature-rich. You can customize the background to fit your desktop, and not just the color; you can use a photo as the background if you prefer.
You can save up to 999 clips (that’s a lot of clips!) and you can delete any clip or send it to the Clipboard or to your Favorites list with a right click. The Favorites feature lets you create boilerplate text you use often. I also like the ability to mark clips with timestamps. And unlike the old Clipboard gadget, this one supports images as well as text. It even has a privacy mode, which prevents clips from being displayed on the main gadget so that passers-by who glance at your desktop can’t see what you’ve saved to the clipboard.

4: Facebook Explorer

One big change in my online life since 2008 is that I’ve become thoroughly immersed in social networking. Much of the discourse that used to take place through email discussion lists now occurs via Facebook. A Facebook gadget seemed like almost a necessity, but the first one I tried (Facebook Sidebar 1.5) didn’t work. It never picked up my info even though it said it was connected. So I tried Facebook Explorer, which worked nicely. It can be configured to run in a smaller or larger width and one of three heights, and you can specify how often you want updates (from every one to 60 minutes). It gives you a compact view of your own status and information or friends’ activities, as shown in two views of the gadget in Figure D. You can also update your status in the flyout.

5: Ultimate Explorer

Ultimate Explorer lets you search popular sites from your desktop without having to go to those sites first in your browser. It’s a compact little gadget with that can search Google, YouTube, Wikipedia, eBay, Amazon, Digg, and many more. You can make it larger if you have plenty of desktop real estate, and you can select up to eight search sites for “snap search,” which enables you to “snap” quickly from one search engine to another. It also includes a flyout calendar and events feature. And unlike the vast majority of gadgets, it even has a flyout Help section, as shown in Figure E.

6: App Launcher

One aspect of Windows 7 that annoyed and frustrated many users was the omission of the Quick Launch toolbar. If you’re like me, for years you’ve relied on the Quick Launch bar to access your frequently used programs. There is a way to get Quick Launch back, but unlike with previous versions of Windows, you can’t separate the Quick Launch bar from the main Taskbar. That means it takes up precious space on the Taskbar that you might need for open programs, system tray items, etc.
Enter the App Launcher gadget (Figure F). It serves the same purpose as the Quick Launch bar but can be placed anywhere you want on the desktop. You can add whatever programs you want by dragging them to the gadget, configure the number of icons to display per row and whether to center them, and change the background image.

7: MiniTV

Want to take a break and catch up on the news? The MiniTV gadget allows you to choose from a number of stations (many of which I’ve never heard of, as well as familiar ones, such as NBC News and C-SPAN). You can watch the program in the tiny gadget window (Figure G) or you can double-click it to display full screen. Just double-click again to get out of full screen mode.

8: Traffic by Bing Maps

Traffic is a simple little gadget that can be useful if you’re about to head out into the big, bad world. I don’t use it as much as some folks would, since I work from home. But I still have to venture onto the major freeways now and then, and it’s nice to know in advance if there are going to be problems along a particular route. One caveat is that you need to live in (or be traveling in) a major metro area to use it. You can zoom in or out, and clicking the traffic info button (which is represented by the red light icon in Figure H) will take you to a full sized map of the area on Bing Maps, complete with the traffic data.

9: Magic Folder

Okay, granted, the icon isn’t the most professional looking, as you can see in Figure I. And many folks won’t like the idea of having a folder make decisions about where to save their files. But for those who always seem to end up with dozens of files sitting on the desktop because they never get around to moving them into appropriate folders, Magic Folder could be a godsend. You just drag your files to the magic folder and it examines the file extensions and sends the files to the “right” folder. For example, .doc files go to the Documents folder; .jpg, .gif, and other image files go to the Pictures folder. The nice thing is that you can add or remove the file extensions recognized by the gadget, change where specific extensions should be put, and you add your own folder locations. If you want to maintain more control, you can set the gadget to prompt you before it moves a file to a folder. Oh, and you can also change the appearance of the folder icon to something a little less…  magical.

10: Open/Close DVD

Open/Close DVD is utterly simple. But it’s handy to have if your computer is sitting under your desk like mine, making it difficult to get to the button for opening the DVD drive door. Just click the open button (the down-pointing arrow shown in Figure J) and it opens; click the Close button (the up-pointing arrow) and it shuts. It doesn’t get any simpler than that. One thing to watch for: If you have more than one drive attached, it will open/close both of them — there is no option to select a particular drive.

1. Portal 2

You can’t possibly be surprised, can you? Portal 2 is not only the sequel to our choice for the very best game of all time – all time! – it’s a sequel that irrefutably improves on that choice in every imaginable way. Some upgrades are obvious, like the longer campaign, the fancier gadgets and the addition of cooperative play. What back-of-the-box bullet points like those can’t tell you, of course, are that the longer campaign still feels as perfectly paced as the original, that the fancier gadgets work as effortlessly and ingeniously as the portal gun or that the co-op is somehow both totally separate from the main game and yet equally compelling and satisfying.

To describe the elements that truly make Portal 2 an unforgettable experience, however, would require spoilers that might ruin that experience. What do we risk saying about GLaDOS, other than that you will fear – but also pity and understand – the infamous villain more than ever by the end? Or about Wheatley, besides the fact that he is surely gaming’s greatest-voiced sidekick? Or about the haunting history of Aperture, the tie-ins with an epic Valve universe and the crazy clever Easter eggs? These are all the things that make Portal 2 so special, and also the things every player should discover on his or her own.

In other words, if you haven’t played Portal 2 yet, stop reading this and go do so immediately. We won’t stoke controversy by declaring it the new best game of all time or anything, but we feel pretty damn comfortable declaring it the best game of 2011 so far, and likely of 2011 period.

2. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

We gushed about the Witcher 2 not only because it’s just fundamentally an amazing game, but it occupies a unique niche in gaming: it’s a hardcore PC-only RPG set in a bleak, morally corrupt (and ambiguous) world. It doesn’t feel like any other game - even if it does have faults, its strengths shine through so greatly that it blows us away. In no other game will you encounter truly difficult moral decisions that have far-reaching consequences so huge you may just react emotionally when you realize what you’ve done – good or bad, although it’s never black and white.

Let’s also not forget that (if you have a beefy PC) the Witcher 2 is utterly stunning to look at. It may just be one of the best-looking games we’ve ever seen, but it’s more than just crisp textures – it’s the game’s world that is filled with imaginative details that bring it to life and make it feel like a real place occupied by real people with real problems, and this in turn makes it a world you really, really want to take the time to explore and appreciate. It’s a place filled with interesting and complex characters as well as bizarre and gruesome monsters, and the danger around every corner ensures it’s frequently exciting even if it can be frustrating in its total refusal to hold your hand. Besides, what are you, a baby? Figure out how the combat system works yourself! It’s more rewarding to work through it anyway

3. Dead Space 2

The original Dead Space was a grippingly tense sci-fi spin on the survival horror genre, yet it was only a modest hit, which is why many were worried about the prospect of a sequel. Logic and history dictates that any changes would only hurt the franchise, turning off longtime fans while failing to gain any new players. Instead the transformation between the first and second games was exploding with improvements for the series and made the original title seem lacking in retrospect.

The most important update was the added depth to protagonist Isaac Clarke. He went from silent cypher to a character with thoughts, feelings, motivations, and (of course) fears. His journey through the ruined city of The Sprawl is all about him coming to terms with happened to him in the first game, and you watch him grow and change as you simultaneously hack the limbs off hundreds of necromorphs. This welcome bit of character exploration was supported by brilliantly eerie levels like the day care, breathtaking set-pieces like the tram crash, and some of the grossest things that have ever happened to eyes in a game. Dead Space 2 not only proved the original wasn’t a fluke, but that it was just getting warmed up.

4. Pokémon Black and White

Even if you don't particularly like RPGs, Pokemon Black/White would still be a smart choice if you had to pick only one game to play for the rest of your life just for the sheer amount of content it contains. With over 600 Pokemon to choose from, each with so many ways to train and customize that two Pokemon are almost never exactly alike, you would have a difficult time exploring all the possibilities within your lifetime.

Beyond the incredibly deep battle and training mechanics we've come to expect from Pokemon, Black/White has raised the bar for online functionality in a Nintendo game – not only do you get the standard trading and battling (which includes a friends list for people you know, plus match-making for finding strangers to play with), but you also get battle rankings, online leaderboards and video chat. And even if you never take it online, the staggering amount of post-game quests and exploration means you still won't run out of things to do. B&W looks and sounds amazing too – it's a showcase for how gorgeous sprite graphics can be, and the soundtrack is lovely and meticulously detailed.

5. Bulletstorm

It’s probably fair to say that nobody saw Bulletstorm coming. Of course, Epic’s involvement got us interested, but People Can Fly? The guys best known for that big pile of old-school madness Pain Killer? Truly Bulletstorm was an unknown quantity, and many were dubious of its wise-cracking balls-out excesses from the start. They said it looked too unsophisticated for modern tastes. They said the humor was unintelligent. They said the whole thing was one big stupid joke too far. But they were wrong. Oh so delightfully wrong.

Bulletstorm, you see, is a deeply clever, intricate design masquerading as a big dumb action game. Far beyond simply emulating the “Kill ‘em all!” maelstroms of Doom and its ilk, Bulletstorm re-taught us a more important lesson from the pre-Call-of-Duty days of FPS. Namely meaningful player input in the cause of mastering one’s environment. Bulletstorm’s insanely imaginative weapon-set and its multi-layered combo potential re-empowered players to kill their own way, giving us back the ability to creatively express ourselves on a mammoth scale, using a million different shades of gore. Fun, laugh-out-loud funny, and with immense replay value thanks to its score-attack Echoes mode, Bulletstorm has as immediate an appeal as any shooter around, but the finesse and depth to keep the most technically calculating, second-shaving point-chaser or speed-runner happy for months.

6. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D

This shouldn’t come as a surprise. A masterfully remade version of one of the most celebrated and best-selling adventures our medium has ever seen? Of course it’s going to be in this article. And even though this remake of a 1998 game bumps something genuinely new off the list, we can’t imagine there’s much dissent. Everything that made Ocarina memorable back then is still relevant today, making this a perfect introduction to the series for newcomers, as well as a misty eyed love letter to those who sprinted home from school to ride across the Hyrulian countryside way back in 1998.

As you can see, the most drastic changes are visual; gone are the vague and fuzzy graphics of the N64 original, now replaced with sharp, updated models and crisp textures that make previously amorphous areas crystal clear. Animation is improved too, giving Link a more realistic trot and detailed facial expressions. Best of all, the cumbersome inventory system that made equipping and un-equipping items a chore is replaced with an entire touch screen on the 3DS, offering quick and easy access to all of Link’s wonderful gadgets. In short, everything that could have been improved has been, and there’s no good reason to sit this one out. If you played the N64 one to death, this is still worth the money. If you’ve never played Ocarina at all, then this is without a doubt the version you need to own. Either way, you really should be playing this.

7. L.A. Noire

In the month or so since its release, L.A. Noire has become pretty divisive, even in our own offices. On the one hand, the game is smartly written, visually fascinating and unlike anything else on the market. On the other, some find its system of evidence and interrogation too rigid and confusing, and its action tends to favor “dramatic” outcomes instead of, say, simply letting players catch up with fleeing perps. It’s not perfect, and it’s not for everyone.

So why’s it on this list? Ambition, for starters. At its core, Noire is a linear detective story that tells you when to investigate, when to shoot and when to ask questions, but it isn’t content to stop there, and lavishes an incredible amount of detail and personality on its freely explorable re-creation of 1940s Los Angeles. Its story pulls no punches, and is immensely compelling as a result, with memorable characters whose motion-captured faces turned out surprisingly easy on the eyes.

What’s almost more interesting, however, is the way Noire makes failure an option. Missed clues and flubbed questions can and will affect the flow of each case, but the story continues, regardless. Infuriating to some, this nonetheless is an incentive to replay cases, hunt for things you missed, and see new sides of the story that you maybe didn’t know were there. Again, there’s really nothing else quite like Noire out there, and few games this year have stuck in our minds quite as much

How To Run Google Android 3.1 On Your PC

Update: The Android SDK tools have been updated and make testing much easier. I've downloaded and installed the latest actually version, Android 4.0, which has been dubbed "Ice Cream Sandwich" and tested it out.

Have you ever wanted to checkout Google Android but don't have an Android phone? Or perhaps you want to checkout the latest tablet version of the OS but don't have a tablet. With a little help from a quick easy to use tutorial from the guys at How-To Geek you can test drive Google Android on just about any PC without having to buy a new smartphone or tablet pc.

In their tutorial How-To Geek shows us how you can run Android on your PC for free with the Android SDK Emulator. The emulator acts like a virtual machine of sorts, tricking the software into running on a platform it wasn't originally intended to use. The software was originally designed to let developers test their apps on the Android platform before running them on handsets. For PC users it gives us a small peak at what Android is capable of and most importantly what some of the latest versions look like before we run out and buy a new device.

Below I'll post some of the basic details on what you need as well as some of my insights into using the software. For a complete guide (with pictures) you should checkout the full tutorial here.

Getting Started - get the software that you need

You are going to need to download a few things before you can start testing Android.

1. First off the Android Emulator requires Java and the Java JDK to run, so if you don’t already have Java installed on your computer you'll need to grab that as well as the Java Development Kit.

2. Secondly you'll need to get the Android SDK installer package from Google

When I first tried following the guide from HTG I had a few issues getting the Android SDK to recognize I had the Java JDK installed. To remedy this I had to completely remove Java from my system, download the regular Java JRE and then install the Java JDK package. Once I did that everything else went smoothly.

Choosing and installing Android SDKs

Once you start installing the Android SDK the installer will want to check Google’s servers for available packages. You'll have several options to choose from that include everything from older version like Android 1.5 to the newest Android 3.1 "Ice Cream Sandwich". You can pick and choose which version you want to test out or just download them all and test them all out.

Personally I recommend sticking with the newer versions which for those of you that want to checkout the tablet version would be Android 3.1 which at the time of this original post was being called "Ice Cream Sandwich" and Android 3.0 "HoneyComb". For those wanting to checkout the latest release for smartphones Android 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 "Gingerbread" would be best. Just keep in mind the more you download the longer it takes.

Almost everything is "accepted" by default so click on anything you don't want to download and tick the "reject button" making sure the selection then shows a red x next to it. There are several extra options I wasn't sure about downloading so I did anyways. I'm not sure they are needed but I figured what the heck.

We are up and running now what?

If you've followed the HTG tutorial and got everything up and running you are well on your way. The first thing you'll notice is that it takes awhile to get things to load. After your first use it will load a bit faster so don't be discouraged.

Since the emulator is really meant for basic testing your options will be fairly limited as to what you can do so don't expect the world.

You can view your favorite websites in the browser, and they will render just as they would on an Android device. You can view a few of the basic apps that come pre-installed and you can install apps that are available online but you won't have access to the Android Market.

Taking things for a spin

Two things to keep in mind, most of the versions of Android are meant to be used on smartphones are other smaller devices and the operating system is meant to be used on touch capable devices. Using a keyboard and mouse can be difficult. You'll notice there are no scroll bars and sometimes typing is difficult. You need to use your mouse like you would your finger, meaning you want to hold the button down and drag the page in order to scroll and I highly recommend trying to stick with the on-screen keyboard. I don't know why it just made things easier

One thing you are bound to notice right off is the emulator running Android 3.0 and 3.1 is really slow and shows some serious lag (keep in mind its meant to be used for a preview not real world usage). Because of the lag browsing the web was very tedious. Typing and scrolling in just about any of the apps lags alot, and I mean alot!! Applications seemed to react very slowly as well and I noticed a few issues with the wrong apps loading.

Final thoughts

The more I used the emulator running Android 3.0 and 3.1 the more responsive it seemed to become. But, for me at least, it never became responsive enough to be really useful. I could access the Android Market through the browser however since I had no actual devices associated with my account it wouldn't let me download anything. Overall for just a peek at the OS things weren't bad for much more than that you'd be better off heading to your local tech store and actually putting hands on the devices.

I found running Android 2.3.4 "Gingerbread" was a lot more responsive and actually easier to use than either of the tablet versions. Typing didn't lag nearly as much, web browsing was bearable and you could actually test some of the apps without wanting to pull your hair out. For this I could see the usefulness as you actually get a good feel for what Android does.
